Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
